Head of Secondary School (Pinheiros)

St. Nicholas School is seeking to appoint a Head of the Secondary with a commitment to inquiry, autonomy, project-based learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. The purpose is to lead the strategic direction, support the mission and be responsible for the daily management of the community, including pedagogical leadership, executive decision-making and budgeting.

  

The Secondary section is a thriving and creative community with over 30 teachers reflecting diverse backgrounds. The IB learner profile is a reference point for learning, and we value collaboration, communication and reflective practice.

The Head of the Secondary counts on the support of a learning and a pastoral deputy. There are strong Head of Faculty and Tutor Teams and a skilled, progressive and innovative cadre of teachers. Parents are active and supportive. Additionally, there is a robust leadership structure for the IB Diploma years (Years 11 and 12). There are strategic and daily links with the Early Years and Primary Sections, and the heads of the three sections support each other to ensure whole school alignment of learning.

 

Candidates will have: 
  • –  A university degree and a related teaching qualification. A master’s degree is welcome but not essential. Evidence of recent professional learning is required
  • –  Leadership experience, preferably with a focus on learning 
  • –  A commitment to inquiry-based learning, international mindedness and IB philosophy  (www.ibo.org)

The Head of Secondary works within the whole site Leadership Team and reports to the Head of Site.

Leadership

Be a role model for all learners and support learning to reflect the St Nicholas mission.

Maintain, develop and lead a professional working environment that is innovative, vibrant and creative. 

Support professional growth to promote learning consistent with the mission.  

Contribute to the School Leadership Team to develop, maintain and lead learning throughout the community. 

Support the Heads of Faculty in developing academic programmes to reflect the learners’ needs and 21st Century pedagogy. 

Support the pastoral team to ensure wellbeing in the section.

 

Managing the Section

The Head of  Secondary is responsible for the community’s daily management, including pedagogical leadership, executive decision-making, and budgeting.  

Lead the smooth day-to-day management of the Secondary Learning Community. 

Apply all School policies as they relate to Secondary School.

Be a visible presence to support relationships and ensure an orderly environment for learning.

Be responsible for curriculum priorities and review documentation.

Plan and implement the schedule of classes (timetable) and assign staff to groups and spaces, overseeing subject choice

Manage the academic budget for the section, supporting heads of Faculty in setting and managing their budgets. 

Arrange for the substitution of absent teachers and support staff as required. 

Promote the use and integration of information technology across the curriculum. 

Organise learner/parent/teacher conferences for reporting learner’s progress. Promote student-led conferences. 

Ensure buildings and grounds are adequately maintained and that the safety and security of learners are given proper attention. 

Proficiently use the school management systems –  Atlas, ManageBac, Google Work Suit and  SchoolBase.  Support all teachers with these tools.

 

Learning  

Be a knowledgeable, caring and supportive presence in the life of all learners. Know the learners, understand their learning and be able to guide accordingly.  Help celebrate success. 

Oversee assessment and reporting and feedback for learning

Maintain a system of grading and reporting which ensures the effective flow of information between school, learners and parents.  

Guarantee a support programme for learners needing support. Refer learners at risk to relevant staff or agencies, and follow up outcomes. 

Work in partnership with parents on all matters relating to student welfare, and support and advise parents as appropriate.

Design the induction and welcome of new learners (and their families). 

Administer external and internal examinations and construct staff supervision timetables.

Analyse annual examination results and create action plans.

Teach one or two groups and offer an ECA –

 

Adult learning 

Create conditions conducive to team building.

Conduct regular meetings with the teachers that support the day to day running of the school and develop and exchange ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest. 

Supporting the PLCs the leading Professional Growth cycles and engaging in regular classroom observation and focused walkthroughs. 

Ensure a positive and supportive model exists for staff assessment and development. 

Develop professional learning programs and development opportunities for staff. 

Liaise with the Head of Site on staff performance, staff evaluation as it applies to Secondary. Support teachers at risk by applying Track D of the performance management system. 

Make recommendations to the Headteacher regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of teachers and be responsible for hiring teachers and teaching assistants where necessary.

 

Families  

Maintain a friendly, open, supportive relationship with families. 

Provide opportunities for families to engage in Secondary School activities. 

Promote the understanding of the mission and learning with families and actively promote and market the School. Contribute information regarding the learning and the promotion of the school.

Maintain good relationships with parents by providing a ready flow of information about the secondary section. 

Support the PTA and attend meetings. 

With the Admissions department, meet with prospective families, and support the enrolments process for new secondary learners. 

Interview applicants for entry into the school and follow the admissions policies.

 

Whole School Responsibilities 

With Heads of Section lead the mission and coordinate school-wide policies

Support whole school events.

Report to The Board/School Owners to outline significant  achievements in the section and future needs and goals.

The Head of Section’s professional growth will be undertaken by the Head of School annually using mutually agreed criteria.
